Classification guidelines for films.


- Universal, suitable for all

It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a 'U' film should be sutiable for audiences aged four and above. 'U' films should be set with a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.
If a work is suitable for a pre school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the consumer advice.



- Parental guidance

General viewing but some scenes maybe unsuitable for young children.

Unaccompanied children may watch a 'PG' film and should not disturb a child aged around eight and older. However parents are advised to consider whether the content will upset younger or more senstive children.




- Both ratings are suitable for 12 years and over.

Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at '12A' and '12'

These catergories are awarded with material, in general, that is sutiable for 12 years and over. Works at these catergories may upset children under 12 and parents may find the material unsuitable.
The catergory '12A' exisits for cinema films only. No one younger than 12 may see a '12A' film unless accompanied by an adult, '12A is not recommened for children uder 12. An adult may take a younder child, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a younger child to view the film lies with the accompanying adult.

The catergory '12' exsists only for video works. Any child younger than 12 may not rent or buy a '12' rated video work.




Suitable for 15 year olds and over.

No one younger than 15 may go to the cinema and see a '15' . No one younger than 15 may buy or rent a video works that is rated '15'.


Suitable for adults only.

No one younger than 18 may go to the cinema and see a '18'. No one younger than 18 may buy or rent a video works that is rated '18'



- to be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or licensed sex shops and not to be sold to anyone less than 18.
The 'R18' category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may only be suppiled to adults in licensed sex shops. 'R18' may not be supplied by mail order.
